Kim Russell receives a treatment for cellulite on her legs.
Doctors say 85 to 98 percent of women have cellulite, and every year they spend time and money on diets, lotions and body wraps to get rid of it. Often these treatments don’t work.
Now a Midland doctor says he has a machine that can treat it.
Dr. Steven Morris from The Plastic Surgery Institute of Mid-Michigan in Midland says he is the only doctor in the state to offer the recently FDA approved SmoothShapes treatment.
Before explaining how it works, it is important to know how cellulite is formed. Dr. Morris says while many people believe otherwise, it is not caused by excess fat.
“Some people think it is due to diet or something they've done,” says Dr. Morris. “But really it’s just a genetic thing.”
If you have the right genes, your body will store fat in the connective tissue of your skin, giving it a dimpled appearance even with only a small amount of fat.
SmoothShapes is a non-invasive treatment that combines laser treatment with massage to break up that fat.
Doctor Morris says it works because there are two wavelengths of light. One puts holes in the fat and the other liquefies it.
The machine then gives you a vacuum massage to move that liquefied fat into your lymphatic system.
The treatments feel like a warm intense massage and are done in eight sessions over four weeks by an aesthetician.
The cost is approximately $1,000 per body area. Dr. Morris says results last for about a year in most cases.
