A 29 year old Port Austin resident has been captured after allegedly robbing the Chemical Bank on N. Van Dyke Rd. in Verona Twp.
The Huron County Sheriff’s Office reports the bank was robbed at approximately 9:42 am Tuesday. The man approached a bank teller, demanding that she keep her hands in sight and no one would get hurt. He then forced her to give him all of her money. The teller complied with his demands and the suspect left the building. The teller reports $4,690 was stolen.
The Sheriff’s department began compiling information and sent out a picture from the surveillance camera to the local media, including NBC25. Several tips came in which led them to a suspect.
A background investigation was done and a search began. It was learned the suspect’s girlfriend had called George E. Greene Elementary school in Bad Axe to request that her child be released because of an unknown emergency. She claimed she would arrive shortly after 1:00 pm. The school was notified and was put into lock down, and deputies surrounded the building.
At approximately 12:47 pm, the suspect and his girlfriend arrived at the school and both were taken into custody without any further incident. The suspect was found unarmed, and a large sum of money was recovered.
The investigation is continuing.
