FLINT -- Good news for people suffering from severe heartburn or acid reflux disease. Mid-Michigan Dr. Gary Wease is performing an outpatient procedure that repairs the esophagus from the inside.
"We do surgical procedures through your mouth so we don't need to make an incision anywhere on the abdomen and it eliminates infection, bleeding, and it eliminates any recovery time," says Wease.
Gregory Bowles says he suffered from acid reflex disease for years.
"Everyday I took a Prilosec plus a second one at night, plus a Zantac and I wasn't able to have a pepperoni pizza or lasagna." Bowles tells NBC25 News, since having the procedure done, he no longer has this problem.
Dr. Wease says the procedure is so new that it has only been done in the U.S. for the last two years.
"This is so revolutionary because not only can we diagnose this problem but in an relatively non-evasive way, we can completely and permanently fix the problem."
Dr. Wease adds, not only can this procedure being done without going under the knife, it can also be an outpatient procedure.
"It reconstructs that valve from the inside of the stomach as opposed to wrapping the esophagus from the outside. This procedure allows patients come in and out in about an hour. They have no pain and no recovery," said Dr. Wease.
"There are so many things you don't realize that change for the better when you get off the pills and cure the problem," said Bowles.
