The walls are coming down for a local eyesore, making way for new development.
The Fort Saginaw Mall in Saginaw County's Buena Vista Township was quite the site in years past a site for sore eyes.
Now, it's a site that makes peoples for eyes sore.
It was Saginaw County's first major enclosed shopping centers.
In the 1960's and19 70's, it thrived with shoppers.
However, in the last few years it's been a haven for seagulls and broken glass.
It was 35-acres of blight.
"It is a hidden jewel," says Dwayne Parker, Buena Vista Township Supervisor.
The diamond has been in the rough for too long says Parker.
Phase one was acquiring the property. That's complete.
The next step is demolition. That's in progress.
By the end November, all the walls should be down, revealing a green space open to possibilities for developers and investors.
Parker says, "Once we see and they see a streetscape project and design in place, it is an enhancement to come on in and develop."
There's talk of retail, restaurants, and recreation.
It's an ideal location on M-46, just off I-75, one of the townships' two major on and off ramps.
Plans are this spring to have everything ready to end the problems and begin the progress.
Buena Vista Township has already secured federal and state grants to begin beautifying the property.
