President Barack Obama says it's now up to the Senate to take the baton from the House and pass a bill aimed at overhauling the nation's health care system. The House narrowly passed a health care bill Saturday night. But how did our congressmen representing northern Michigan vote on the health care bill?
Democrat Bart Stupak from the U.P. (Menominee) supported the measure - after he added an amendment restricting the use of federal funding for abortions.
In a statement, Stupak says, "As health care costs financially drain families, businesses and government, the time to reform our health care system and ensure all Americans have access to quality, affordable health care is now."
Republican Pete Hoekstra (Holland) representing West Michigan voted against the Health Care reform Bill.
Calling it a government take-over of health care, Hoekstra says "Such a huge bill that would take over 18 percent of the U.S. economy completely shreds the founding fathers' vision of a limited federal government."
Republican Dave Camp from Midland - who represents the Traverse City area - also voted against the bill.
Camp says democrats and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi chose not to listen to the American people and instead forced this bill through the house. Camp says "The over $730 billion in taxes in this bill will be a crushing blow to an economy that is still hemorrhaging jobs. The mandates in this bill will drive up the cost of health care in America and bankrupt our states...."
