Elkton-Pigeon-Bayport student diagnosed with meningitis

A student in the Elkton-Pigeon-Bayport School District been diagnosed with bacterial meningitis.

School officials say the disease was detected in a kindergarten student at Laker Elementary.

The school was closed today because of the illness. However, the high school football game will be played at its away location.

The Center for Disease Control reports bacterial meningitis is highly contageous. It can be passed through activities like kissing and coughing.

Symptoms include fever, headache and neck stiffness.
