"It looks like crap," says Amber Shultz describing Fox street, where she lives. Vacant lots with overgrown grass are next to her neat and tidy home.
Soon thanks to federal stimulus dollars, her view could change. $2.4 million in federal money is paving the way for the Kettering Gateway project. It involves re-paving and in some places widening the roads from I-69 to Kettering University in Flint.
Shultz says she says she can see how potential students may be turned off driving by, "They think it's a bad neighborhood or something, but its really not."
Flint Transportation Director John Carpenter says the roads will soon not only look aesthetically pleasing for students, but will be easy to follow. Right now folks have to zig zag street to street from I-69 to the university.
"If you went there as a potential student, you'd have a hard time finding Kettering without a G.P.S. Device," says Carpenter.
In contrast he says after the renovations, drivers will enjoy a clear path from Hammerburg Road, to Miller Road to Fox Street to Chevrolet Avenue.
"It is definitely a tool for drawing business there," adds Carpenter.
The city plans to use the renovations to entice investors, and make the vacant industrial site across from Kettering more marketable.
The project is still in the planning stages. It is expected to break ground in Spring 2010, and be completed by fall.
