Mayors from across the country, including a few from Mid-Michigan came to bat for the Big Three in Washington this week.  Bay City’s mayor, Charles Brunner was a part of a delegation of roughly 16 mayors.

“We knocked on some doors of senators and some congressmen.  We wanted to put a face on the concept of loaning to the autos some money to get through some difficult times,” Brunner said.

About $25 billion is the need according to internal estimates within General Motors, Ford and Chrysler.  Brunner said GM’s Bay City plant contributes about $2.4 million a year to the county budget, and another $1.4 million annually Bay City’s budget.

“It’s more than taxes,” he said.  “It’s the workers that work in the plant and spend their money.  It’s just so huge to our community.”

The idea came about last week after Lansing Mayor Verg Benero decided to get a number of local officials together from across the country.  In Washington, Brunner’s group was met with representatives from dealerships and parts suppliers as well.  He said it was a multi-faceted team, delivering an important message.

“If this industry is allowed to go under, the Center for Automotive Research estimates three million jobs would be lost.  It would have a tremendous ripple affect.  They are asking for $25 billion and I think it’s crucial that they get that capital,” Brunner said.

Help GM,Help America

The Big 3 built to what the market demanded. Mini-vans for soccer moms, work trucks for construction workers etc, and then Toyota and Honda jumped on the big truck and SUV bandwagon.GM has more cars that get 30 mpg than any other manufacturer. The Malibu is the most reliable and affordable vehicle in the U.S according to JD Powers. Let's not forget that after9/11 Gm gave millions in aid and gave zero% financing to boost the economy. Toyota,Honda,Etc. gave zero dollars. It is time to support those who support America. A GM vehicle built in the U.S. contains 82% domestic parts, a Toyota built in the U.S. contains 40% domestic as Toyota imports much of their parts.

NO WAY

Sorry, but GM does not deserve a bail out especially when it's executives will NOT sacrifice anything for their company and it's workers. Today, top executives showed up to Washington in personal jets costing an average of $20,000 per trip, plus they received NEW vehicles this year, and they are getting their multi million dollar bonuses at the end of Dec. Congress asked each of them if they would give up their jet to help out Gm, and on the record, they each said no. So why does Gm need a loan if their own top executives are still living it up while union workers are barely making it? GM needs to go bankrupt so they are forced to restructure and rebuild, of course MI will be hurting, but in the end it will be worth it. By the way, this is coming from a daughter of a retired Gm worker and was raised in a union family.
