For not being a polished public speaker, Williamson held his own on the microphone. At times, he looked off camera and drifted from the question, but for the most part he kept the debate going, touting his accomplishments in his first term as mayor. Williamson says, "I'm rebuilding this town to give it a different image than when I came here." Dayne Walling was quick to fight back. He said "It's going to take more than sledge hammers and steam-rollers to get Flint back on track." They debated about how much money the city has, Williamson says there's a $6.4 million surplus. Walling says, the mayor's math is faulty, and that the city can't maintain its current financial situation. Both candidates went on to make each other look bad. Walling said, "There's not anything in Flint that he (Williamson) owns, but a junkyard and maybe a pawn shop. We've got a scrimmage squad at city hall right now. Many of those appointees would not be given a job interview in other cities across Michigan." Williamson said, "I want to apologize to Mr. Walling for being so naive about what's really going on in Flint because he obviously doesn't know what's going on in Flint. I'm not going to hold his youth and inexperience against him." In the end, both candidates believe they won. But whoever won Monday night, means nothing, compared to who wins November 6th.
