A Saginaw County man has learned a valuable lesson about crime. Not only does crime not pay, it can also be downright embarrassing.
As part of his sentence, Philip Kolinski of Carrollton Township was ordered to clean the Veteran's Memorial outside the Saginaw County Courthouse, with a toothbrush Tuesday.
The 73-year-old convinced people to give him scrap metal. He said he wanted to sell the metal to build a memorial for Veteran's of the war in Iraq.
Prosecutors say instead, he kept the money.
Kolinski was ordered to pay back $11,000. He also had to wear a T-shirt reading "I stole from veterans" as he cleaned the memorial.
Judge A.T. Frank armed him not only with three tooth brushes, but also a bucket of water and soap.
Tina Szarenski stood by to watch Kolinski clean. She thinks the sentence was fair. "I don't like anyone who steals from veterans, as we are a military family. We had friends over there when they did Desert Storm," she tells NBC25
Kolinski told us, he didn't do anything wrong. "I didn't steal anything from any of the veterans if that is what you want to know," he says.
Despite what Kolinski said Tuesday. He pleaded guilty to the charges.
