Many people think there are two seasons in Michigan: winter and road construction. But they're wrong! The road construction season runs at the same time as mosquito season. NBC25 put several products to the test and you can decide what's best for you.

Our trek begins at Gillroys Hardware in Clio where we size up the sprays. "It's pretty much got the same stuff," says assistant manager John Thomas. He says the sprays have different packaging, labels, and that's about it. They do the same work.

We also see an interesting contraption: an insect fogger.

Thomas says, "It's propane powered. It emits a fog over your whole yard, and it's going to kill the bugs. It's going to last couple days, real effective."

NBC 25 bought a can of Off spray and a new product, Skin Armour. You wash yourself with it, and it's supposed to keep the bugs off.

We also test a natural concoction of thieves oil, lemon, purification oil, peppermint, and lavender. They're provided by Tom Sheppard of Mt. Morris who got them from Young Living Essential Oils. Sheppard says, "You can dilute it with water, put it in a spray bottle and it's just as effective, spray yourself down, go outside at night, and the mosquitoes are going to go 'Who's this guy?'"

NBC 25 intern, Rebecca DeMars, will go the natural route. NBC 25's promotions assistant Bryan Fork will try out the bug soap, and NBC 25's Dan Armstrong will use the spray. After ten minutes of standing by standing water here are the results.

First, the natural recipe. DeMars says, "It worked pretty good. The mosquitoes landed on me, but i haven't gotten bit."

Now, the bug soap. Fork says, "It worked really well. It was easy, once we put it on, mosquitoes didn't bother me at all."

Finally, the spray. Armstrong says, "I didn't have anything land on me, so I think we have three winners."

The biggest difference is in the price. The spray is around $7. The soap is $15. The combination of essential oils can be around $100, but the oils are natural and non-toxic.

All three products warn against getting it in your eyes.

I switched from YL to DoTerra last year. The Bug Repellent blend works better and you don't have to mix it yourself. The DoTerra Peppermint and Frankincense are the best smelling oils we ever had, even after 9 years with YL. email me for more info, or find out more at our FREE class Aug. 18th:

Various oils can be used to blend a YL Bug Spray.
I have been using this blend for the past two summers. Spending suumers between S.Florida and Alabama I do not leave home without it.

10 drops lemon (has citronellal)
5 drops purification
(antiseptic & sanitizing properties)
3 drops Tansy,Idaho
5 drops Peppermint (soothes a cools skin)
5 drops Lavender
(universal oil, traditionally been known to balance the body and work werever there is a need, helps with insect bites, stings, eczema, rashes etc...)

Put drops in a small spray bottle (5 oz. or so) fill the rest with water. Carry in your beach bag, back pack or cooler. Shake each time before you use. Enjoy the outdoors.

Non-Toxic Bug Spray

Posted by stacey kimbrell, Flint Mich - Wednesday, July 29, 2009 at 2:06 a.m.

I am a Chemical Awareness Specialist and i teach all over the USA. Young Living is the best blend i have found for Bug prevention and if you do have a bite of any kind. You can also use 6 drops peppermint
6 drops tea tree & 9 drops citronella

Put in little spray bottle of water and mist the skin to protect yourself from insects, flies & mosquitoes. Or (into 1 ounce) coconut oil, olive oil or V-6 oil use the same combination of bug repellent oils and rub on.

It is very important to understand that you must read you labels and don't take anyone's word for it. Go read you FAMILY bug spray it will say "hazardous to humans" your not even suppose to spray it on your skin. Burt Bees got bought out by Clorox Bleach 1.5 years ago (i'm not using there stuff now). You ask how can this be.. Well there are no laws for truth in advertisement! I would of never though that myself until i started researching Chemicals in our Foods, Drinks and Skincare. Most is toxic but there are still things you can do. Visit LivingAnointed.com for a free chemical cheat sheet with over 180 chemical in our everyday products that affect our health with learning disabilities, behavior issues, diabetes, cancer etc.
I you need bug spray that is not toxic please contact me it will not cost $100.00 but it will prevent you from being posioned. One other note: if your pH balance is off (to acidic) the mosquitoes will love you. Drink lemon in your water to balance you pH.

Young Living Oils are hands down the best

Posted by L. McCooey, Plattsburgh, NY - Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at 7:59 a.m.

Young Living Oils are derived from nature, and what better to use, something that is totally natural or other wise? What we put onto our skin is absorbed into our skin, bottom line, there are more than enough bad stuff out there, try the natural approach. The Thieves blend (which smells WONDERFUL by the way) retails for $41.78 and can be used in so many ways, not just as a bug defuser, it has been proven to eliminate mildew, and the best part, it's all natural! I can attest Young Living Oils work. Their Lavender works wonders if you have a hard time falling asleep, and the Tsuga is the best for bunion flare ups. Anybody interested in the natural approach should seriously check out www.youngliving.com. If you feel interested and would like to become a member to experience what nature has given us that is safe and that you can help others with issues, please visit their site. My #1077077. Clarification of costs

Posted by Beverly Claussen, Modesto, CA - Monday, July 13, 2009 at 5:31 p.m.

Thanks to whoever clarified the cost - $100 may be the initial cost, but when you a) make a spray with water and it lasts such a long time and b) the essential oils are usable in SO MANY OTHER WAYS, the cost is negligible. Young Living Essential Oils Are Wonderful

Posted by Kimberly Jarvis, Merritt Island, FL - Saturday, July 11, 2009 at 11:40 a.m.

The Young Living Essential Oils are wonderful. They're 100% natural & the plants they come from are grown on virgin farmland that has never seen a pesticide. They have many uses including, first aid, cancer treatment, aroma therapy, an aid to healing after surgery, etc., just about anything you can think of. For the mosquito repellent, you don't need all of those oils mentioned in the article. All you need is about 10 drops each of Purification and Thieves mixed with about 8 ounces of distilled water. Since each bottle contains at least 250 drops, they will last you a very long time. The retail price of a 15 ml bottle of Purification is $23.36 and the retail price of a 15 ml bottle of Thieves is $41.78. If anyone is interested in the Young Living products, please feel free to email me at fiche59469@mypacks.net. Young Living Member #1058713.

bug repellent test

While the essential oils will cost more in the beginning, if you only use it for bug spray - you will get at least two years of mosquito repellent out of them. Way more cost effective, all natural so they won't harm the earth or your bodies!! I never liked putting all those chemicals on myself or my children. Now I don't have too and as long as I am using Young Living Essential Oils I know we are receiving unseen health benefits!! Young Living Oils are therapeutic grade and are used for medicinal purposes. Anyone wanting more information can contact me at mom.1ntripets@gmail.com

Natural products do so much more

Posted by Pat Ruta McGhan, Cadillac, MI - Tuesday, July 07, 2009 at 6:18 p.m.

I have been making a bug repellant for a number of years with my company, Nature's Balance. It contains many of the oils mentioned in the article, plus catnip which has been reported as effective as DEET, bergamot and geranium. These latter two also have bug repellent properties. My Bug_Be_Gone spray or ltion has been used extensively by natural resource field-going people. They report back that they love the spray, because, in addition to being a bug repellant, it smells great, makes them feel great, and they aren't putting on harsh chemicals. The products retail for $12 for the spray and $11 for the lotion.

oils for bug repellent

Posted by Nancy Watson, Houston, Texas - Tuesday, July 07, 2009 at 12:46 a.m.

There is no way the cost of making a "bug repellent spray" cost $100. It only takes a few drops of YL pure essential oils (not alcohol based) & no more flys, bugs, fleas etc. contact: nwatson@younglivingworld.com for more information.

Essential oil bug spray

Posted by Mary Hendrick, Denver, CO - Sunday, July 05, 2009 at 1:49 p.m.

Purification oil works great to keep spiders at bay. I spray it in the corners of rooms and also use it as a bug spray along w/patchouli, which bugs despise. As mentioned, the cost factor is negligible when you figure out how much bug spray and other uses you receive for your investment. Lavender is in my 1st aid kit and is wonderful for 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th degree burns. There is literally no scarring after using this oil. Peppermint can be used for indigestion, food poisoning, headaches, sunburns, etc. Check out www.youngliving.com (#109877 - Mary Hendrick) if you want to order these oils. My e-mail is: essenyrs@comcast.net Have been working w/the oils for 12 years and have tons of tips for other uses too numerous to mention here.

Purification and lemongrass and Thieves WORK.

What they forgot to tell you is that you can make about a HUNDRED spray bottles of bug spray and also use the oils on spider and critter bites, with your initial investment. Essential oils are cheaper AND healthy.
Thanks for including them. Yvonne

Essential Oil-Based Spray Can Be Cheap

Posted by Kayla Saltz, Baton Rouge, LA - Saturday, July 04, 2009 at 1:43 a.m.

I cringed to see the description of the Essential Oil prices at around $100. My company, Saltz Scents, Inc, sells an insect repellent made of a blend of essential oils for $8.95 (http://stores.saltzscents.com/-strse-95/mosquitoes-sinus-bugs-peppermint/Detail.bok).

The Room & Body Spray is utterly all-natural containing only distilled water, alcohol and highest quality, pure essential oils. I spray it on myself, my nieces, and the items on my back porch. I put drops of Don't Bug Me! Pure Essential Oil Blend (only $9.95 http://stores.saltzscents.com/-strse-7/mosquitoes-mosquitos-sinus-bugs/Detail.bok) in my unscented liquid laundry detergent and unscented dryer sheets to further keep the unofficial state bird -the mosquito- away.

One can certainly spend a hundred bucks on Essential Oils, but that kind of money isn't necessary to keep bugs away. Thanks for doing the story and including Essential Oils in the testing!

Thanks!

Essential Oils as Insect Repellants

Posted by Ilene Gottlieb, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida - Friday, July 03, 2009 at 9:37 a.m.

How wonderful to hear an NBC affiliate talking about Young Living Essential Oils and their benefits!! If there's a mosquito around during our rainy season, which lasts 6 months here in South Florida, they find me all the time!! I've been using several drops of the Young Living blend Purification in a spray bottle with water as a mosquito and "no see 'em" repellant for years and it's incredibly effective. And the retail cost is only $23.36 for a bottle that contains 250 drops! For more information, check out my website at http://tinyurl.com/37cf42 or email me at healingig@aol.com. I'm happy to share. Oils are a Multi Purpose Product

The great thing about using the oils is that those oils are multipurpose and not just for a bug repellant. So while you spend a few dollars more at first, there are so many other ways to use them and they last a very long time.

Aromatherapy Essential Oils as Bug Repellant

Posted by Diana Ewald, Winter Park - Wednesday, July 01, 2009 at 3:11 p.m.

I love that people are looking for natural solutions and are willing to experiment with therapeutic grade essential oils. Please know that therapeutic grade are much different than the oils bought in stores ~ these oils are contaminated with chemicals and synthetics which enables the company to spread the batch further increasing their profits. Chemicals are cheap, just like junk food is cheap. But your body will reflect the choices you make in the long run so why risk your health putting chemicals on your body?

If you are interested in a chemical-free life, therapeutic grade essential oils are the optimal wellness solution to all of your needs. Integrity, purity and potency are what drives our company. A 15ml bottle contains 333 drops and believe me, one drop goes a long way! Please visit my web site, http://aromatherapyliving.com to learn more and purchase oils that are good for you or call me at 407.399.8562. Your health is worth it.

Essential Oil Repellant

Posted by Terry Wicker, Owensboro, Ky - Wednesday, July 01, 2009 at 1:11 p.m.

I am really pleased that finally essential oils are getting the publicity they need. I use and sell these oils and they will not only keep bugs away, but they also have a lot more benefits. There is a website that will show testimonials of people who have had good results with the essential oils for various reasons. Go to www.oil-testimonials.com, click on search. If you have a question about indigestion, put that in the box and testimonials from real people will come up. If you have a question about what an oil will do, you can put in the oil name. Essential oil bug repellant test

Posted by Bonnie Rogers, Sunriver, Oregon - Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at 9:17 p.m.

I enjoyed the article but was very disappointed in the price quoted for the oils. I use and sell these very oils and it was misleading on the price. True if you wanted to purchase all those essential oils to make the bug spray to buy all four 15 ml bottles it could cost up to $100 (depending on your price) but the fact would be how many bottles of bug spray could you make with those four bottles? The answer would be ALOT. You only use a few drops of each oil in a bottle of water. There are at least 275 drops in "each" bottle, you might use 5-7 drops each in a bottle. I personally only use 2 oils in a bottle of water and my people come to me each year and I add drops of oil to their bottle of water. They tell me it is the best bug repellant ever. I just thought I should clarify the $100 is not what one bottle of bug spray would cost. I figure maybe $2 most for someone that has a bottle with water in it. Thank you for allowing me to share,Bonnie in Sunriver, Oregon

Therapeutic Essential Oils Changed My Life - and many of my patients

Posted by Marilee Tolen, Cherry Hill, New Jersey - Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at 4:36 p.m.

As a Holistic Nurse I always look for the natural approach first. Bug repellant sprays can have very toxic ingredients and I can just cringe when I see parents spray or lather thier children and babes up with these chemicals - when it is so simple to use what God put here on the earth - essential oils from plants and herbs - to counteract not only bugs - but pathogenic bacteria / viruses and other microbes. I was one of those kids who had DEET based products slathered on - and had many immune issues growing up - hence, Holistic Nursing - I've dealt with many 'chemical sensitive' people in my practice - and essential oils help with so many things - including keeping those summertime bugs away - all naturally. Essential Oils as Insect Repellants

Posted by Evelyn Vincent, North Carolina - Thursday, June 25, 2009 at 10:33 p.m.

Interesting article.

One tiny flaw though, the cost of the Young Living essential oils to make your own nontoxic spray is misleading, here's why...

One 15ml bottle of Young Living essential oil contains about 250 drops. And in a 4oz. spray bottle filled with water you'll use anywhere between 6 and 10 drops (depending on how strong you want it.)

Therefore, buying a bottle of the blend "Purification" at wholesale costs $17.75... $17.75 divided by 250 equals 0.017 cents per drop.

So, even if you make a strong spray (using 10 drops), the amount of Purification essential oil you'll use to make the 4oz. spray is going to cost .71 cents.

Further, you'll be able to make "25" - 4oz. spray bottles with one bottle of Purification.

For those who are interested, the Young Living essential oil called "Palo Santo" (from a tree in South America relative to Frankincense) is much better at keeping insects away - much better! As a matter of fact, it even kills ticks - here's an article I wrote telling you how to use Palo Santo against ticks http://aromatherapy4u.wordpress.com/2009/05/11/essential-oils-and-tick-season/

Palo Santo costs $32.75 (wholesale) and is available in a 5ml bottle (yes, a smaller bottle and more expensive than Purification)... but it kills ticks that are embedded, and it even keeps away the insects of the Amazon jungles, whereas Purification won't do either.

Just thought y'all would like to know. Happy Summer!
