Free, Confidential HIV Testing Offered During National HIV Testing "Week" June 22nd - 26th. In recognition of National HIV Testing Day which is held annually on June 27th, several local community organizations and health departments are highlighting free, confidential, and anonymous HIV testing during the week of June 22nd through June 26th.
"National HIV Testing Week is an excellent opportunity to stress the importance not only of HIV testing, but HIV prevention and education," says Tom Brubaker, community relations coordinator for BASIS-Sacred Heart Rehabilitation Center, Inc. "Currently,1 out of 4 people who are infected with HIV, don't know it because they haven't been tested," Brubaker says. "Over 18,000 Michigan residents are living with HIV/AIDS. In addition to free testing and counseling, safer sex materials and HIV prevention information is also available." "It is extremely important that people get tested, especially persons who have had unprotected sex or used intravenous drugs," Brubaker says. "By knowing your HIV status, we can slow the spread of HIV infection and get people who are infected with HIV, into treatment and care services," he says.
