MANISTIQUE -- It looks like the possibility of sending Guantanamo Bay prisoners to the U.P. isn't going over well with local residents.
State Representative Steve Lindberg paid a visit to Manistique Monday morning. There, he talked with the local constituents about their concerns including using Camp Manistique as a possible location for Gitmo prisoners. He said most community members seem opposed to the idea.
Currently, the facility is also being looked at as a regional jail which Lindberg said would be a good use of the facility.
"Last I heard, it was pretty much Luce County and Schoolcraft County looking at going together, but that still could change," said Lindberg. "This county, Schoolcraft County, certainly does need a new jail. I mean the jail they have is no longer serving the function that it should serve."
Lindberg also said he was disappointed in the closing of a state prison and three camps in the U.P.
He hopes those losing their jobs can find other jobs with the Department of Corrections.
