MORRISVILLE -- Governor David Paterson paid a visit to SUNY Morrisville Thursday morning to discuss the state’s financial situation and his plans to solve the budget crisis. In a news conference following the governor’s town hall-style meeting, Paterson was asked about his portrayal by actor Fred Armisen on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” (SNL). The governor ripped into SNL for its portrayal of him on a pair of “Weekend Update” sketches.

When first asked for his reaction, Paterson, who is legally blind, said he could not repeat it. When pressed by Action News, Paterson said that SNL was “mocking my disability” and compared the show to a “bunch of third graders.”

Paterson said that the impression doesn’t bother him, but he pointed out a 37 percent unemployment rate in the disabled community, and a 71 percent unemployment rate among the blind.

The governor says that one of the biggest issues facing those with disabilities it attitude. He remarked that “these programs that present themselves as comedic relief in many ways are degrading people… I’ll bet you that Saturday Night Live would think twice if they did the same kind of routine and made fun of someone’s race, religion, or national origin.”

Paterson concluded the news conference with a jab back at SNL, stating “I think they need to bring back Sarah Palin, because they obviously ran out of material.”

Seriously SNL wouldn't poke fun at him if he didn't make a fool out of himself. I understand he has seeing difficulties;fine get a pair of glasses, or get some lasek eye surgery. Don't go on national television holding a paper up to your nose.

gov. patterson has respectfully carried our state to a new era he is the first blind man in history to hold the highest office in our state and for that i respect him for that but as a amn who is deaf on one side i have put in numerous applications.but when the employers ask me if i i have any disability i tell them that i had last surgery that for the removal of a tumor that caused the deafness in one ear they tell me to look somewhere else because they dont need me thanks to the system i cant draw disabilty to help with my bills the system says i work which true i can and i do not want help butit comes a time when you have to swallow your pride and ask for help.he is a example to us all. thank your honor for showing that the disabled can work and can be productive you go mr gov all the best .dont let the jokes get you down heads up.

I find it inexpressably sad to think that anyone could condone the "mocking" of a disability. I think this particular nastiness was a direct aim at Paterson and that makes it even more distressing. He is, afterall, our governor. YUCK! People are not particularly compassionate creatures. Rude, poor manners.

GROW UP

Patterson calls the wasilla kettle black

Patterson ruined his credibility by suggesting SNL turn their attention to Sarah Palin, who happens to be an ELECTED governor of another state. It's not ok to make fun of disabilities but you CAN make fun of their accents, take their comments out of context, re-enforce urban myths (I can see Alaska from house...doesnt know Africa continent etc.), and make a sentient human being into a caricature. He disgusts me. He should look within, justice is blind.

Chris, he is the governor of the State of New York, not a member of congress

Correct me if I'm wrong

Hasn't Saturday Night Live made a living out of making fun of "race, religion and nationality" Eddie Murphy's "Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood" and Dana Carvy's "Church Lady" skits are just two examples....Political correctness has its place in society but I am not sure it applies to SNL

Come ON!

You know, maybe poking at someone's disability isn't the most moral thing to do, I admit. But for someone in Paterson's position to get upset over a stupid joke on t.v., is childish in it's own rights! His disability hasn't stopped him from rising to such a powerful position and we are starting to see even more disabled politicians as well. Get over it!
Furthermore, why in this economy, when presented with such an opportunity, would one ask THIS man such a question as opposed to, oh, I don't know,: "Why,Mr. Governor, would you even consider making cuts in health and education, when there are so many worthless projects going on in this part of the state alone, that are flushing tax payers hard earned money down the drain?" Just an example, but I guess people in Syracuse are more worried about who's laughing at whom, than where our money is going! I mean it's not like we're working for it or anything! COME ON PEOPLE!
Also, if our governor is so concerned about people with disabilities and ignorant people cracking tasteless jokes, maybe, just maybe, HEALTH CARE and EDUCATION should be the last cuts he makes.

Get over yourself

Posted by David Kratz, Upstate NY - Thursday, February 12, 2009 at 6:40 p.m.

SNL has used the same format of spoofs since it first came on the air. Some say it has degraded from what it used to be, but I say it is the people who have stopped being able to laugh. SNL has done skits with other famous persons with disabilities. I myself am a disabled vet but I can laugh at myslef. Saying that SNL was portraying his blindness is an idiaotic statement because of course they portrayed his blindness because he is blind. Did anyone have a problem when they use to do skits about Ray Charles or Stevie Wonder. Paterson wouldn't have to worry about being portrayed if he didn't come up with ridiculously funny ideas of how to solve important issues.

Jim Kenyon started his question to Gov. Patterson by saying, if I heard him accurately, "Governor, this is an (may be) off the wall question." In my opinion Jim did not need to preface his question. He is reporter who has always conducted his interviews with dignity and respect.

One of the differences between society today and society of 25 years ago is how we treat our public officials. For a television program to mock the highest elected official in the State of NY, the governor of 17 million people, is another example of the decline for respect, dignity and appreciation that we show for one another. Jim's question served to remind us that we should respect the position of Governor of New York State.

Please!

I have been disabled for almost twenty-four years. I seriously think that Mr Paterson has a real problem if he can not find the humor in SNL. One thing my nephews have taught me was to laugh at myself. They had a friend who was wheelchair bound who told them jokes about being disable. They shared them with and made me laugh on some dark days for me. Laughter truly is the best medicine!

SNL mocking blind Patterson is atrocious

Posted by Susan Leslie, Watetown, NY - Thursday, February 12, 2009 at 4:53 p.m.

First of all,my 20ish year old kids say no one watches this show anymore because it has gotten that bad. Never is it funny or fair game to attack physical or mental disabilities. This is an accomplished, intelligent, gutsy leader in a state that has been served by far lesser men. I surely stopped watching SNL after the 2 weeks of Palin. They are being outrageous in a desperate attempt to stay on the air.

More serious issues than SNL

Posted by C N, Syracuse - Thursday, February 12, 2009 at 4:33 p.m.

At a time when unemployment is at record numbers and people are faced with serious economic troubles, you choose to focus on the SNL spoof during the Governor's visit??

Seriously?

Posted by J. P., Upstate NY - Thursday, February 12, 2009 at 3:23 p.m.

I think it's only fair to include the Governor in satire. Come on people, are we so politically correct we can't make a joke just because a person has a disability or is a political figure. SNL has made fun of people for years and has even poked fun at race, religion and sexual orientation. We need to stop being so stuffy and learn to laugh once in a while.

Support for Governor Paterson

Posted by Timothy E. Kelly, Watertown, NY - Thursday, February 12, 2009 at 2:45 p.m.

If CNY calls making fun at a persons disability, then maybe SNL should go after him/her. I myslef thougt it was in bad taste, to make fun of our governor. He has taken on a big job and I feel he is up to it. He's the only one in years that has faced the financial problems in the State. Give him support not jokes.

CNY

David Paterson needs to get over himself. SNL has been making people laugh with spoofed real world people forever. Lets face it he brings alot of new material to the table.
