Severely injured Michigan Veteran, Marine Cpl Josh Hoffman, will receive a specially adapted barrier free home from Homes For Our Troops. The home will incorporate the latest state of the art green technologies and will include additional high tech systems to enable him to regain much of the independence he has lost since being injured.
The ground breaking press conference took place in Middleville, MI at Foxmoor Court on August 19th. A three day-build brigade will be scheduled in a few weeks. Cpl Joshua Hoffman, USMC 1st BN 24th Marine Regiment-Michigan was hit by sniper fire in Iraq in 2007 on his 3rd tour of duty. The sniper bullet severed his spinal cord at the base of his neck and left him a quadriplegic. After over a year in the hospital Josh still faces months, if not years, of physical therapy as he strives to regain movement to his upper body and develop his language skills.
Homes for Our Troops is seeking financial donations in addition to donations of labor and building materials and volunteer services for this project. Brookstone Homes has signed on with Homes for Our Troops to be the General Contractor. Since being founded in 2004, Homes for Our Troops has completed 28 homes throughout the US and has 26 additional homes in various stages of construction throughout the United States. All homes completed by Homes for Our troops are turned over to the veterans and their families at no cost thanks to the generous support of countless volunteers, sponsors and community involvement. Project Events In order to involve the local community as much as possible, both to raise awareness of the issues faced by these Veterans and also to obtain donations of funds, labor and materials, we hold four events at most projects. Homes for Our Troops starts with a groundbreaking ceremony to kick off the project, then a Build Brigade which is a 3-day construction blitz where the frame is put up and install the doors, windows, roof and siding so the homes is “tight to the weather”, then a Volunteer Day near the end of the project so unskilled individuals can help doing landscaping, painting and other unskilled tasks, and finally we have the Key Presentation when the home is done and ownership is transferred to the Veteran.
