FLINT -- The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan sent a letter, Monday, to interim Flint City Chief of Police David Dicks about the enforcement of the so-called "sagging pants" code. The code enforcement means Flint Police officers can ticket someone whose pants are sagging so low that they are showing skin.

Gregory Gibbs, President of the ACLU Flint Branch says, "Under no stretch of the imagination does wearing saggy pants that reveal the top of one's boxer shorts violate the Flint Disorderly Conduct Ordinance. It is clear that the ordinance provision that is cited by the police chief requires that a person openly expose certain body parts to be guilty, Flint residents should be embarrassed by this colossal waste of time and scarce resources."

Interim Flint Police Chief David Dicks sent a memo out on June 26th letting the public know officers would be enforcing the ordinance.

I just sit and laugh as I see the boys running around with their ass and little fellows hanging out and walking like they just met the front end Bubba's bar of soap on a rope up where the sun dont shine.Whats even funnier as they walk holding onto their britches in the crotch for dear life as though someone might come along and steal it!Like anyone would want it anyway.

Waste of More Than Just Taxpayer Money

I am an 18-year-old who lives in Flint. When this fad started, I ridiculed it with the rest of the girls. I don't know if guys thought it looked attractive, or if they had just given up. Having said that, I do not believe that Dick is takiing the right course of action on this. It is a fad; nothing more. It cannot be construed as anything more than that, such as a rebellious act or a sign that the person wearing said pants is a known gang member. The whole fad started in prison, if you can believe that, as a way to let other prisoners know that you are looking for a relationship. I'm sure that if the guys who sag their pants knew this, they'd be hiking 'em up that very minute, but just because a law is concocted out of nowhere (with no logical basis in fact, just Dick's personal beliefs), no one will want to obey it, simply out of principle. I'm not trying to change anyone's mind; I just want my opinions to be known.
If you agree, that's wonderful. Maybe we'll get Dick to finally see sense. If you don't, that's fine, too. I wish you a wonderful life, and I hope I never have to meet you on this face-to-face. Dick, I'll be praying for you to make the right decision (whatever it may be) to benefit Flint's future, and the lives of it's residents.

Stupid Laws create Real Criminals

Posted by Jeremy Jones, Allen Park - Monday, July 21, 2008 at 11:58 p.m.

First of all, the law is too general. Someone can get apprehended and "warned" for their waist-band showing. That's ridiculous.

Second of all, the punishments are too severe. Since this law is obviously targeted at the youth of Flint, a single fine (around five hundred dollars, if I'm not mistaken) could easily break the bank of anyone caught breaking this so-called law.

Third of all, dictating fashion is not the job of the government on any level. Nor is it the job of the majority or public. It's the job of the individual what they wear and how they wear it. Unless there's something obviously hanging out (I'm talking flesh, not cloth), there is nothing wrong or indecent.

And lastly, when you have a law that is so easily broken and can include jail time (up to a year), you create a criminal that may have previously not existed. That's what happens when someone feels that they're wrongly prosecuted/convicted (and rightly so).

What about the flip side?

While I'm no fan of the saggy pants look unless private parts are exposed whats the harm? If your going to jail young males for dressing this way, your also going to have lock up all the young women wearing shirts to small that ride up their bellys!

parents need to step up

Posted by don jennings, clio - Thursday, July 17, 2008 at 5:11 a.m.

If parents would step up and not allow their children to wear what they want then laws like this would not have to be passed. I used to own auto repair business and would have students from alternative education that would show up with baggy pants and told them if they wanted to work at my business they would wear the proper clothing, only had to tell them once, showed up with proper clothing the next time.
Parents it is time to act like parents and not your childs friend.

A spelling lesson on a saggy pant thread?

Posted by Kristi O'Donnell, Clio - Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at 9:36 p.m.

Patrick from Flint was expressing his opinion on the saggy pants issue in Flint. I suggest sticking to that issue instead of attacking someone over his spelling. That isn't the issue here saggy pants is. I applaud Flint for not allowing that form of dress and I hope it extends to Saginaw as well as it is greatly needed there too.

No respect

Posted by Kristi O'Donnell, Clio - Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at 9:14 p.m.

The saggy pants look is not only sloppy looking but just outright disrespectful. Whatever happened to parents disallowing this form of dress? If this is "just a phase" then it needs to be PHASED OUT. This look screams I'm a would be criminal and labels ANYONE who dresses this way a would be criminal whether they are or not. First impressions are everything and what respectful employer wants to give a job to someone dressed this way? Not any employer I know of.

UNDERWEAR GOES UNDER YOUR PANTS

Posted by JEFF BUTRON, CARO - Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at 10:23 a.m.

WHEN DO YOU SAY YOU’VE SEEN ENOUGH, OR WHEN HAS IT BECOME ACCEPTIBLE TO WALK AROUND OUTSIDE IN YOUR UNDERWEAR? SOME OF THE GUYS IVE SEEN MIGHT AS WELL LEFT THEIR PANTS AT HOME SINCE THE WAIST IS SO FAR DOWN. I SUPPORT THIS LAW COMPLETELY AND HOPE THAT THEY WILL ENFORCE IT. IM NOT SHOWING YOU MY DRAWERS DON’T SHOW ME YOURS!

what a joke

Posted by Debora Smith, Durand - Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at 10:05 a.m.

While I don't like the style either, does that give you the right to make it illegal? Sounds like another way local Government can make a few extra buck's.
What a joke.

SAGGING PANTS

Posted by PATRICK ROBINSON, FLINT - Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at 9:25 a.m.

WHY ARE PEOPLE AGAINST TRYING TO ENFORCE OUR LAWS.IT IS VERY INDENCENT WHEN PEOPLE HAVE TO SEE PEOPLES REAR ENDS.NO ONE SAIDS THAT OUR POLICE DEPT IS GOING TO IGNORE OUR CRIMES IN TOLEDO,BUT WHEN IT COMES TO CLEANNING UP OUR CITYS THEY ARE CONSIRNED TOO.WE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE NOICE LAWS WHERE PEOPLE WERE COMPLAING WHEN CARS GO DOWN THE STREETS AND MUSIC BLASTING,NOW THIS ,I SALUTE THE CHIEF ,AND HES DOING A GRATE JOB SENCE HES BEEN IN OFFICE.PATRICK,

This may be considered unconstitutional BUT it's very unsightly!

Posted by Jodie H., Beaverton MI - Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at 9:12 a.m.

My son likes to wear his pants baggy which I can not stand and I am constantly yelling at him to pull up his pants. This is a style that youth have not changed yet. I consider this look very unsightly and I wish the youth would start respecting how they present themselves to the world.

Unfortunately - that will not happen till they grow up and want to look good for a girl to charm.

As far as Banning this look from the city when the cops have more important issues to deal with than sagging drawers, is just wrong!

Maybe They'll Trip and Fall and Knock Some Sense Into Themselves

Posted by Joe Whitey, Sagnasty - Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at 7:43 a.m.

Doesn't the Flint Police Department have anything better to do than chase kids around with saggy pants? How about the murderers, rapists, gangs, and drug dealers? This is a waste of the Flint Taxpayers money and a way for Dicks to show he's doing his job when he's not.
Also...
INFORCE should be "enforce" (Patrick, you spelled it right once)
FAZE should be "phase"
SCREEMING should be "screaming"
INDECENTLY should be "indecent"
INDENCENT should be "indecent"
THREW should be "through"
(Patrick you should be more worried about getting a proper "edumacation")

SAGGING PANTS

Posted by PATRICK ROBINSON, FLINT - Monday, July 14, 2008 at 6:37 p.m.

IM VERY PROUD OF OUR POLICE CHIEF,TRYING TO CLEAN UP OUR CITY AND INFORCE A LAW THAT SHOULD OF HAD SOMEONE STRONG ENOUGH TO ENFORCE IT.WHEN YOU SEE PEOPLE WEARING SAGGING PANTS,I MYSELF THOUGHT IT WAS A FAZE THAT WOULD BEEN GONE BYE NOW,BUT ITS STILL HEAR.PEOPLE SCREEMING BECAUSE OF TRYING TO MAKE THIS A LAW,I KNOW THIS IS HARD TO ENFORCE,BECAUSE OUR LAWS INFORE INDECENTLY LAWS ,BUT WHEN YOU SEE PEOPLE WALKING DOWN THE STREETS AND YOU CAN SEE THEIR REARS THATS INDENCENT.WHAT THESE PEOPLE WHO ARE TRYING TO STOP THIS FROM GOING THREW NEEDS TO KNOW WE HAVE RIGHTS TO,NOT TO HAVE TO SEE THIS MESS.GOD BLESS OUR POLICE CHIEF ON STEPPING UP AND DOING SOMETHING ABOUT THIS AND WE ARE BEHIND HIM A 100 PER CENT.PATRICK ROBINSON ,FLINT,MI
