Over 300 people showed up at the Vehicle City Skateboard Competition Saturday. Skateboarders from all over Genesee County competed in Flint's Skatepark first competition at the Swartz Creek Golf Course.
$3,000 in cash prizes, donated by Patsy Lou Williamson, were awarded to the top ten places in each of the three divisions; advanced, intermediate and beginner.
Flint Mayor Don Williamson opened the park just over a month ago, he hopes the new skatepark will attract more young people to the area.
"Skate boarding is big for the youth, the small youth," Williamson says. "We are in fact, giving more money in cash away today for the prizes than what we paid for the skate board park."
Hotdogs, chips and pop were also sold at the tournament to help raise money for a more permanent cement skatepark. It will cost $500,000.
