(AP) -- INDIAN RIVER, Mich. - A local priest says northern Lower Michigan's Cross in the Woods needs hundreds of thousands of dollars in repairs for wood rot.

The Reverend Richard Baranski is acting pastor at the Indian River shrine. He says the wood on the cross and the surrounding altar is showing signs of rot and needs major repair work. Fund raisers want to raise 500-thousand dollars for the project by the late summer of 2009.

The 55-foot wooden cross is fashioned from a single redwood tree and was erected in 1954 about 20 miles south of Cheboygan.
