FRANKENMUTH -- Frankenmuth resident Lloyd Clark had been battling the city and it's residents for a month over the Lutheran cross on the city's shield.

"I want people to know that it was not intended by me to bring all this turmoil on the community."

Clark, who claims he's an atheist, was on a road to sue the city after he heard the city council would not remove the cross from the shield.

Clark believes the cross on the shield violates the constitution.

"I want to keep that wall between Church and State strong."

Hundreds of people responded to his effort by putting crosses in their yards, while many others showed up at a city council meeting May 5th to defend the city's shield.

Longtime resident Wayne Bronner has been following the controversy and is in support of the cross.

"I think the citizens were upset with someone coming in and messing with a fabric of our community."

Clark says he started receiving letters, and phone calls from people asking him to call it quits.

He says his family and friends told him they were embarrassed by him.

"When your friends don't want to be associated closely with you in the community - or be seen with you and so forth it has an impact on you."

So Clark is giving up and will not pursue the issue, but he hopes the City of Frankenmuth will do the right thing and still consider removing the cross from the shield.
