School: Valparaiso University Hometown: Norway, Michigan
Joe Charlevoix was born in Norway, Michigan, a small town located on the Wisconsin border near Iron Mountain in the Upper Peninsula. Ever since he was a young child, he has been fascinated with the weather. When Joe was 3 or 4 years old, he was drawing weather maps with crayons and his eyes were glued to the television meteorologists, most notably at WLUC TV6 in Marquette.
Joe lived in Marquette, Michigan until he was 5 years old, and then moved to Marinette, Wisconsin for three months. When he was six years old, his family moved to Norway, Michigan where he grew up and where his family lives today. Growing up in the Upper Peninsula was a great experience. Joe was able to enjoy the outdoors, and all of the things that make life in northern Michigan so great.
Throughout high school, Joe was active in sports, band, and was class president senior year at Norway High School. During Joe's junior year of high school, he lived in the town of Nordenham, Germany located on the North Sea as an exchange student and traveled throughout much of Western Europe.
After high school, Joe attended college at Valparaiso University in Indiana. One of Joe's best memories from college was his freshman year when Valparaiso went to the Sweet 16 in the college basketball tournament. While in college, Joe pursued a degree in Broadcast Meteorology and interned in Chicago with WGN-TV Chief Meteorologist Tom Skilling. Tom and Joe remain close friends and Joe has learned much from the veteran meteorologist.
Joe graduated from college in May 2001 with a degree in Broadcast Meteorology and a minor in Geography. Shortly after graduating, Joe accepted a job back in the Upper Peninsula with ABC Affiliate WBKP/WBUP-TV in Marquette, Michigan as morning news/weather producer and anchor and noon show meteorologist. Joe also provided weather for radio station WKMJ-FM in Houghton, Michigan.
Now in Traverse City at WPBM/WTOM, Joe is excited about the opportunity to stay in northern Michigan forecasting the weather, but also to provide outdoor reports, something he greatly enjoys after growing up in the U.P. In his spare time, Joe loves to travel, hunt, fish, read, and social activities. You can catch Joe during the week in the morning on 7&4 News Today.
